Employing BIM and 3D modeling techniques in bridge design can be very helpful in understanding and addressing geometric challenges that are unique to transportation structures. By leveraging intelligent modeling tools, the BIM/3D model can become a data rich model that aids in the detailed design process and construction documentation production. This presentation will review examples of using data and modeling techniques for going beyond 3D geometry when modeling bridges and other transportation structures. Drew works in Associated Engineering's Edmonton, AB Transportation Structures group providing design services for bridges, culverts, and other transportation structures. Prior to joining Associated Engineering, Drew worked as a general contractor for 8 years on site as a field engineer and contract administrator as well as providing construction engineering services such as formwork design, crane analysis, and construction layout. Drew also has a strong background in Building Information Modeling (BIM) and has worked on large projects initiating BIM execution plans and overseeing multi-discipline modeling teams. He is proficient with several BIM capable applications such as Autodesk Civil 3D, Fusion 360, Infraworks, Inventor, Recap, and Revit.
