How will we “step into the data” to virtually visualize and predict outcomes of high-performance strategies early in the design process? Two leaders from SERA Architects, David Johnson and Brian Stevens will conduct a provocative facilitated visioning exercise about what visualization tools (Mixed Reality, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality) could provide in terms of building and community sustainability and resilience.
This discussion will center on how visualization platforms and interactive virtual environments (gaming) can be conceived and engineered to support early assurance of efficacy of high-performance strategies that the AEC industry and our communities of constituents are demanding. We can use VR and AR design environments to visualize sustainability and best support client sustainability goals. The millennial generation are facile using data streams already in existence, now could be the time to “gamify sustainability” to create more good.
David is a recognized leader in integrated design with three decades of international experience. David leads the California practice for SERA Architects, a 180-person design and planning firm committed to positive, regenerative and sustainable design. Prior to SERA, David was a partner at William McDonough + Partners, where he managed the international practice for seven years and guided the firm’s implementation of the Cradle to Cradle sustainability protocol within the firm’s building and community designs. David is an expert advisor on Integrated High Performance Design and Circular Economy strategies. David an advisor to Healthy Building Network (HBN) and the HomeFree Program. As an educator, David taught the regenerative design studio at Stanford University. David served as Planning Commissioner in California and is actively involved with the AIA, ULI and SPUR, a Bay Area planning body, where he is a member and advisor of the Bay Area Regional Water and Policy Board.

Brian has over 20 years experience specializing in creating architectural visualizations that enhance the design process. He has led the visualization group at both his prior firm of ZGF Partnership and currently SERA Architects. He enjoys implementing new technologies including drone based aerial imagery and 3D printing. Brian has recently embraced the shift from traditional still images and animation to real-time depiction of the built environment. This enthusiasm stems from the promise of developing technology that enables the creation of an environment where design isn't just depicted but is experienced in an informing and interactive manner. Armed with the insight gained from this experience, designers are better able to create a physical environment that responds to and builds upon both external and internal forces.
