In the ever-evolving construction industry, productization is no longer an option but a necessity in order to meet both the uniquenesss of each construction project and budgetary constraints. This evolving paradigm shift is reflected in the design of this year’s Building Transformations Innovation Spotlight Award.
Inspired by the 2022 Best in Innovation Award Winner, Eglinton Crosstown West Extension - Integrated Digital Controls, Dassault Systèmes and AECON have teamed up to develop a design leveraging the concept of productization while symbolizing the tunnel extension project. Through a simplistic design workflow, the objective of the team was to explore as many concepts as possible while ensuring manufacturability and meeting budget constraints.
Based on this thinking process, the origin of this award was very simplistic, formed by “blades” inserted into a base, and through which several meanings are conveyed: the shape of the award is progressive and sharp to reflect innovation, the form of the award relies on the coming together of many individual pieces to symbolize teamwork as well as the letter “A” from AECON (front view), and the letter “D” from Dassault Systèmes (back view).
Using CATIA on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, the award was created through a Design-to-Manufacturing process. Leveraging digital continuity and customization through these tools enabled an unlimited production feedback loop integrating design and fabrication. The resulting designs have been materialized through three digital manufacturing processes, which are laser cutting/engraving, CNC wood machining, and 3DPrinting.
