Faced with challenges stemming from aging facilities and convoluted access to reliable information, the Parc embarked on a transformative journey to diversify its activities and revenue streams, opening to broader markets in the event hosting sphere, space leasing, sports industry and beyond. Here, we delve into the intricacies of the Parc olympique’s transformation, exploring how innovative BIM and digital solutions have become instrumental in overcoming these challenges and driving positive change. In today’s dynamic industry, digital transformation and BIM have emerged as critical enablers for success. While some organizations have fully integrated BIM into their workflows, others are in the process of gradually adopting these innovative methodologies. The Parc olympique took a strategic approach to integrate BIM and digital solutions throughout its infrastructure lifecycle. Leveraging the expertise of BIM One, the Parc implemented a well-structured, multi-year plan that encompasses various elements (image above: Subset of BIM implementation plan showing tasks currently happening), including creating toolkits and workflows for BIM project management (image at right), providing extensive training in Autodesk Revit to in-house technicians, conducting comprehensive diagnostics on existing information management practices, and deploying multiple platforms to create a cohesive Common Data Environment (CDE) for the organization. This integration of digital methods and processes aims to optimize the Parc’s operations, ensure seamless collaboration, and drive data-driven decision-making throughout the organization.
The Parc olympique’s journey towards digital transformation involved the creation of tailored toolkits and workflows that served as the backbone of BIM project management. At the heart of this transformation lies the robust BIM Protocol, meticulously designed to adhere to openBIM standards, ensuring seamless interoperability and information exchange for construction projects. Complementing the Protocol are 11 process workflows, intricately mapped and compiled in a dynamic BIM Guide, offering comprehensive support and resources from project kick-off to handover.
Investing in the upskilling of in-house technicians in Autodesk Revit has proven to be a prudent cost-saving measure for the Parc. Empowered with newfound skills, technicians can now accurately model the facility with information-rich representations (top image on page 30) that will feed into the foundation of the Parc’s digital information structure.
Incorporating innovative solutions such as Cupix and Newforma Konnekt, the Parc optimized communication and collaboration within the organization and with project stakeholders. Cupix, an advanced tool for site progress monitoring and model accuracy verification, facilitates remote site observations, reducing the need for physical site visits. Meanwhile, Konnekt, the chosen collaborative platform, has become the communication hub for project stakeholders (Figure D), uniting them around the 3D model and streamlining design and construction-related communications efficiently and effectively.
The implementation of the BIM Protocol, alongside comprehensive processes and workflows, yields substantial benefits for the Parc Olympique. Streamlined project execution has fostered effective communication and collaboration among stakeholders, eventually leading to the timely delivery of high- quality project deliverables. Automation of quality control processes (Figure E) using various cutting-edge tools (Figure F) significantly reduces the need for internal rework at the end of each project milestone, saving valuable time and resources.
By equipping technicians with the skills to accurately model the facility, the Parc has equipped its workforce to handle the increased information flow expected in the coming years, hopefully resulting in notable cost savings.
Furthermore, the implementation of innovative solutions like Cupix and Konnekt has had a transformative impact on the Parc’s operations, maintenance, and event organization. The creation of a master site model, featuring consistent levels, grids, volumes, zones, and spaces, has fostered comprehensive visualization, orientation, and efficient navigation within the complex, benefiting both staff and visitors. Additionally, the diagnostic of the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) has quantified gaps in asset information, paving the way for improved standards and unified access to information. Process mapping has also been instrumental in identifying directions of improvement for better efficiency and coordination across various operational activities, alleviating staffing burdens and enhancing overall performance.
